Coordination Flashcards
What are chemical mediators?
These are chemicals that are released from certain mammalian cells and have an effect on cells in their immediate vicinity
What are the two main forms of coordination in mammals?
The nervous and hormonal system
Give two examples of chemical mediators?
Histamine and Prostaglandins
What are differences in the way that hormonal and nervous systems communicate?
The hormonal system communicates by chemicals whereas the nervous system communicates by nerve impulses
What are differences in the way that hormonal and nervous system transmit their responses?
Transmission is by the blood stream in the hormonal system but by neurones in the nervous system
What are differences in the speed of transmission in the hormonal and nervous system?
Transmission is relatively slow in the hormonal system but very rapid in the nervous system
What are differences in the responses from hormonal and nervous systems?
In hormonal systems, the response is widespread, slow but long-lasting but is localised, rapid and short-lived in the nervous system
What are three things that plants must respond to?
Light, Gravity and water
What is indoleacetic acid (IAA) an example of?
A plant growth factor
