Nervous Control Flashcards
What are the two major divisions of the nervous system?
The central nervous system and peripheral nervous system
What is the simplest type of nervous response to a stimulus?
A reflex arc
What is the peripheral nervous system divided into and what do they do?
Sensory neurones which carry nerve impulses from receptors towards the CNS and motor neurones which carry nerve impulses away from the CNS to effectors
What is the motor nervous system subdivided into?
The voluntary and autonomic nervous system
What emerges at intervals along the spinal cord?
Pairs of nerves
What are the 3 neurones involved in a reflex arc?
Sensory neurone, intermediate neurone and motor neurone
Why are reflex arcs important?
They are involuntary so do not require the decision-making powers of the brain, They protect the body from harmful stimuli and They are fast because the neurone pathway is short with very few synapses
