Neurones Flashcards
What does the cell body of the neurone contain?
This contains the nucleus and large amounts of rough endoplasmic reticulum associated with the production of proteins and neurotransmitters
What are neurones?
Specialised cells adapted to rapidly carrying electrochemical changes called nerve impulses from one part of the body to another
What are dendrons?
Small extensions of the cell body which subdivide into smaller branched fibres called dendrites that carry the nerve impulses towards the cell body
What is the axon?
A single, long fibre that carries nerve impulses away from the cell body
What is the role of Schwann cells?
They surround the axon, protecting it, providing electrical insulation and carry out phagocytosis and play a part in nerve regeneration
What is the myelin sheath?
The myelin sheath forms a covering to the axon and is made up of Schwann cells and allow nerve impulses to be transmitted faster
What are the nodes of Ranvier?
Gaps between adjacent Schwann cells where there is no myelin sheath
What are the 3 types of neurone?
Sensory, motor and intermediate
