Diabetes And Its Control Flashcards
What is type 1 diabetes?
Type 1 diabetes is insulin dependent and is due to the body not being able to produce insulin. It may the result of an autoimmune response whereby the body’s immune system attacks its own cells, in this case the beta cells of the islets of Langerhans
What is diabetes?
A metabolic disorder caused by an inability to control blood glucose levels due to a lack of the hormone insulin or a loss of responsiveness to insulin
What is type 2 diabetes?
Type 2 diabetes is insulin independent and is normally due to the glycoprotein receptors on the body cells losing their responsiveness to insulin and may also be due to an inadequate supply of insulin from the pancreas
How can type 1 diabetes be treated?
Through injections of insulin directly into the bloodstream when blood glucose levels rise too high
How can type 2 diabetes be treated?
Type 2 diabetes is controlled by regulating the intake of carbohydrate in the diet and matching this to the amount of exercise taken. In some cases it is also treated by injections of insulin, by the use of drugs that stimulate insulin production or by drugs that slow down the rate of glucose absorption fro the intestines
