total fertility rates Flashcards
total fertility rates
-average expected number of births per women of child-bearing age (15-49 years)
-global average is 2.2
-replacement rate is 2.1
-australia 1.58
causes of declining TFR
-extension on family planning programs especially in rural and lower SES areas.
-improvements in healthcare and hygiene
-empowering women - education
-role of gov policies eg China i child policy.
replacement rate
-the level of fertility at which a population exactly replaces itself from one generation to the next
-only child family decreases the population
impact of TFR
-if the replacement rate of 2.1 is not maintained the pop will start to decline.
-a demographic dividend can be created - with a large, younger labour force to spur a county’s development.
-however the mass increase will eventually get older.
