Cameroon - National Response Flashcards
Why was the foundation formed
-there was concern over rapid rate of deforestation, caused by extension of Cameroon railway, corrupt practices, lack of technical expertise.
-triggered introductory of the forestry reforms of the forestry law in 1994.
negative aspects of the response
-law failed to adequately protect the interconnected social + economic rights of the people living in + near Cameroons forest.
-reserves saved aside are too small to develop into viable enterprises
-Indigenous + forest dependant communities still often have no legal tenure over their traditional forest lands (owned by state)
forestry law consists of:
-community based forest management
-creation of ‘permanent forests’
-increased timber prices - ensuring revenues are directed to development projects.
