-doesn’t take into account the gender or age of the population.
-world average CBR 17.3, AUS 12.1
-highest CBR is in African countries - 45.5
-lowest is japan + Germany - 7.5, 8.5
causes of CBR increases
-in developing countries
-high infant mortality increased meaning more births so some children survive into adulthood
-economic asset - farm work
-limited family planning + choices = contraceptives, advice + cultural belief
-low level of education for women - decision making
-government legislation against abortion + birth control
-some cultures see large families as social success
causes of CBR decreases
-children can be an economic liability with costs of education, housing etc
-low infant +mortality rates due to health + medical services
-government supported welfare to take care of parents
-high level of access to contraceptions and family planning
-women have high levels of education, leading to careers + delaying pregnancy.
-pro-natlist religious beliefs may be rejected by many
-less family pressure to marry/have children.
