land cover Flashcards
land cover
the observed biophysical cover on the earths surface.
cultivated + managed
natural vegetation removed + replaced with another type of vegetation.
-human activity is needed to sustain this land cover
-plantations + crop farms
natural + semi-natural vegetation
natural vegetation is based on climate, soil, landform, hydrology
-usually indigenous/native
-semi-natural is influenced by human activity
-includes regrowth
eg. grazing, selective logging
cultivated aquatic + regularly flooded
aquatic crop, purposely planted, cultivated + harvested
-also includes irrigated areas, eg wet rice paddies
-regular seasonal rains, monsoon, floods, cyclones all contribute to regular flooded areas
-remains largely unused due to loss of soils + short growing seasons.
natural + semi-natural aquatic
natural vegetation adapted to water close to or on the surface
-mangroves + wetlands
artificial surfaces
pretty much only human construction
-buildings, roads, mines, landfills, rails etc
bare areas
an area with less than 4% vegetation cover.
-both hot + cold deserts
-salt-pans, rocky coasts, bad lands
artificial water bodies, snow + ice
dams that form reservoirs
-weirs to control flow, canals + snow machines
natural water bodies, snow + ice
collection of water, either fresh or sold, solid and liquid
-oceans
-seas
-lakes
-rivers
-glaciers
-ice sheets
