Topik1.2 Mmt Flashcards
What is manual muscle testing?
Procedure to test function and strength of individual muscle or group of muscle
List all grading
0 no contraction
1 flickers of contraction
2 gravity eliminated
3 gravity resisted
4 some resistance
5 maximum resistance
Factor affecting
Age- muscle strength increase from birth to 20-30 years
Gender- man is more stronger than woman
Type of contraction - more tension during eccentric contraction (muscle lengthen) than isometric contraction (no muscle lengthen)
Fatigue- tired muscle will decrease muscle strength
Principles of mmt
- Patient and therapist in comfortable position
- Stabilize proximal joint
- Apply pressure againts muscle action
- Apply pressure gradually
- Muscle tested 3 times and compare
- Isolate muscle
- Test uninvolved muscle to get normal strength
Reasons for mmt?
To determine the extent and degree of muscle weakness after injury or disease
Contraindications of mmt
Inflammation/pain
Application of mmt
- Always instruct/ inform patient about procedure and what we want to get after test
- Make sure clothing is loose and no restricted movement
- Advise patient not to hold their breath
- Test uninvolved limb first
- Test all muscle to examine in one position before change to another position
- Provide stabilization to avoid unnecessary movement
- No jerking when apply resistance
- Avoid repeat testing in painful joint
