topics 1 and 2 ~ atomic structure and and periodic table Flashcards
what is an atom
the smallest part of an element that can can still be recognised as an element. no overall charge
what is an element?
an element contains only one type of atom
what is a compound?
two or more elements chemically bonded with each other
what is a mixture?
contains two or more elements or compounds that are not chemically bonded together. can be separated using physical methods (filtration, distillation, ect)
what is filtration?
a process that separates mixtures of insololuable solids and liquids
what is crystallisation?
a process that separates a mixture of a soluble solid from a solvent using evaporation
what is distillation?
a process that separates a mixture of liquids based on their boiling point
what is chromatography?
a process that separates mixtures by how quickly they move through a stationary phase
what is an isotope?
an atom of the same element that has the same number of protons and electrons but a different number of neutrons
what is reletive atomic mass
the average total mass of an atom, taking isotopes into consideration
