DNA (Polymers) Flashcards
What is a chromosome?
The long DNA molecules are usually held in tightly coiled structures called chromosomes
What are genes?
Small sections of DNA located on a chromosome, which codes for transfer of genetic information, are called genes
Why is DNA considered a polymer?
It is made up of repeating monomers called nucleotides
What is a nucleotide?
A phosphate, sugar and nitrogen base
How are the bases joined together?
By weak hydrogen bonds between them
How are nucleotides joined together?
By condensation reactions (the by-product is water)
What does a DNA molecule consist of?
A double helix made up of two long polymer strands of nucleotides
How many different monomers are found in the polymer strands of DNA?
4
