Electrolysis Flashcards
What is electrolysis?
The process where ionic substances (which are either molten or in an aqueous solution) are split apart using large amounts of electricity
What is an electrolyte?
The substance which is broken down during electrolysis
What is the difference between a strong acid and a weak acid?
A strong acid gives of more particles of hydrogen than a weak acid does
Describe the behavior of sodium and chloride ions if table salt was heated to a high temperature and turned molten
The particles could move around freely
What is a positive ion called?
Cation
What is a negative ion called?
Anion
What is current?
The flow of electrons from negative to positive
What are the positively charged ions attracted to?
The cathode (negatively charged electrode)
What are the negatively charged ions attracted to?
The anode (positively charged electrode)
What is Oxidation?
The loss of electrons
What is Reduction?
The gain of electrons
