Topic C4 - Chemical changes acids, bases and salts ( metal reactivity and electrolysis ) Flashcards
Define a acid
An aqueous solution which has a PH less than 7.
What can a base be used for ?
To neutralise an acid
What is a neutralisation reaction ?
When an acid and an alkali react together to form water
What are the molecules in a strong acid ?
All molecules will ionise - this produces lots of H + ions
What are the molecules like in a weak acid ?
Only some of the molecules will ionise - this will produce less H + ions
Define alkais
Metal hydroxides that dissolve in water
Acid + base =
Salt + water
Example equation of a acid + base
Sodium hydroxide + Hydrochloric acid = sodium chloride + water
Acid + carbonate =
Salt + water + carbon dioxide
Acid + metal =
salt + hydrogen
What is oxidation ?
The loss of electrons
What is reduction ?
The gain of electrons
What is a displacement reaction ?
When a substance has reacted with a compound of another substance to see which one will steel the spectror ion
What is at the top of the reactivity series ?
potassium
What is the least reactive element on the reactivity series ?
platinum
