C6 the rate and extent of chemical change Flashcards
What happens if all the reactants have a high concentration ?
Greater chance of successful collisions per unite time.
What happens to the reaction if the reactants concentration falls ?
Less chance of successful collisions per unite time. so rate falls as well
What factors affect reaction rate ?
Temp
concentration
surface area ( solid )
catalyst
Define concentration
is a measure of how much there is in a certain volume.
What happens if the concentration of a compound decreases ?
Less particles in the same volume
What will happen to the reaction if there are less particles ?
- less collisions
2. the amount of product will be less
What happens if the gas has a high pressure ?
Increase in number of particles in the same volume
Define temperature
The measure of the amount of energy particles have.
What happens to the particles if they are warm ?
They will have more energy and there will be more successful collisions per unit time.
If a solid reacts with a gas or a liquid were does the reaction take place ?
The surface of the solid.
When do chemical reactions take place ?
When the reactant molecules successfully collide with one another. ( The collision must have enough energy called the activation energy )
What is the equation for rates of reaction ?
Rates of reaction = Amount of product produced / Time
How can we measure mass ?
If gas is produced or colour change
What is a catalyst ?
Is something that speeds up reactions but is not used up
What does an acid + base =
Acid + base = salt + hydrogen
