Topic 7 - Populations Flashcards
What is a population?
A population is a group of organisms of the same species occupying a particular space at a particular time
What is allele frequency?
Refers to how common an allele is in a population.
What is a gene pool?
A gene pool is the combination of all the genes and alleles present in a reproducing population or species.
What is the Hardy Weinberg equation?
p^2 + q^2 + 2pq = 1
p is the frequency of one (usually the dominant allele) and q is the frequency of the other (usually recessive allele) of the gene.
What is an ecosystem?
Area with its own community of organisms and physical environment, all interacting as a relatively self sustaining unit.
What is a habitat?
Is the place where an organism normally loves and is characterised by physical conditions and the other types of organism present.
What is a community?
All the populations of different species living and interacting in a particular place at the same time.
What are abiotic factors?
The non-living, physical conditions in an ecosystem, such as temperature, light, soil conditions and rainfall
What are biotic factors?
The effects of the activities of living organisms on other organisms. Food availability, predation and other competitions are examples of biotic factors.
What is ecology?
The study of the inter-relationships between organisms and their environment.
