Topic 7-Humans And The Enviroment Flashcards
What are the conflicting ideas to converse wildlife?
1) humans need homes/buildings. This destroys land.
2) natural habitats are destroyed by deforestation.
3) the environment production has a change to favour the production of food is needed for humans.

What is the purpose of intensive farming?
Higher yield in less space.
Name four examples of intensive farming?
1) fertilisers
2) pesticides
3) disease control
4) battery methods
What are the advantages and disadvantages of fertilisers?
Advantage-increase yield
Disadvantage-can wash out soil and pollute streams and rivers (eutrophication).
Disadvantages and advantages of pesticides?
Advantage-increase yields. Prevent pests from eating crops or in competition with crops.
Disadvantage-can destroy non pest organisms. Chemicals can be consumed by humans as chemicals remain in the crops.
What are the disadvantages and advantages of disease control?
Advantages-prevent loss of organisms to disease.
Disadvantages-May be consumed by humans as antibiotics remain in meat.
What are the advantages and disadvantages of battery methods?
Advantages-less energy lost so less food needed. Cheaper meat and more animals.
Disadvantages-the quality of life is poor.
What does bovine TB stand for?
Bovine tuberculosis.
What animals spread bovine TB to cattle and how we prevent it?
Badgers and badger culling.
What is an alternative method to preventing the spread of bovine TB?
