Topic 5 - Types Of Pollution Flashcards
Where in the food chain are humans and how does pollution affect us?
The top and it’s at its worst.
Name the 8 steps of how fish are effected during pollution.
1) Bacteria feeds off the sewage uses up the oxygen in the water.
2) Sewage and fertilisers both stimulates plants growth.
3) Microscopic plants such as algae has the biggest effect because they grow very fast.
4) Algae bloom occurs (only in plants) this traps light for water plants to photosynthesis therefore they die.
5) Dead algae accumulates in the water.
6) Dead plants and algae provide food for bacteria.
7) Bacteria resources using the oxygen.
8) Fish suffocate due to lack of oxygen.
What types of pollution can affect us humans?(name 2)
1) Heavy metals from industrials waste. It will enter water supplies which we consume.
2) Consuming pesticides.
What is bioaccumulation?
Where chemicals become more concentrated as they pass through the food chain.
Towards the top of the food chain what can happen to the pollutants?
Build up toxic levels.
