Topic 14-Variation Flashcards
Examples of genetic variation are:
Hair colour
Eye colour
Flower colour
Free ear lobes etc
What causes variation?
Genetic and environmental.
Examples of environmental variation are:
Scars
Piercings
Hair styles
Stunted growth in plants etc
What is continuous variation?
Where and individual can be at any point along a range of variation. Example, height can range from smallest to the tallest person in the world.
What is discontinuous variation?
Distinct categories of variation. For example blood groups.
What is a sexual reproduction?
There is only one parent so the offspring are genetically identical. They are called clones.
Reproduction increases variation. Why does this benignity humans?
If the environment changes, there will be a variety which will enable us to adapt to new environments.
What is the process of new genes appearing?
Mutation.
How is mutation caused?
Exposure to ionising radiation.
