Q

what happens when an alternating voltage is applied across the primary coil?

A

the magnetically soft core magnetises and demagnetises quickly, inducing a voltage in the secondary coil

Q

how are transformers used in mains electricity?

A
  1. voltage produced by power stations is too low to be transmitted efficiently.
  2. step-up transformers boost the voltage
  3. step-down reduced the voltage after its transmitted so its more useful and safer to use
