Topic 5 - Density and Pressure Flashcards
what is the formula for density?
density = mass / volume
what are the units for density?
g/cm³ or kg/m³
how do you convert from g/cm³ to kg/m³?
1 g/cm³ = 1000kg/m³
what factors do not affect density?
size or shape
what does average density determine?
if an object will float
how would you find the density of a box-shaped object?
- use a balance to measure the mass
- measure the length, width and height. calculate volume by multiplying them
- use the formula (density = mass / volume) to calculate density
how would you find the density of a irregular-shaped object?
- use a balance to measure the mass
- submerge the object in a eureka can filled with water. the displaced water will be transferred to a measuring cylinder
- record the volume of water in the measuring cylinder
- use the formula (density = mass / volume) to calculate density
what is the formula for pressure?
pressure = force / area
where does pressure at any point act in gases and liquids at rest?
equally in all directions
what does pressure increase with in gases and liquids?
depth
what is the formula for pressure difference?
pressure difference = height x density x gravitational field strength
what is pressure measured in?
pascals (Pa) or kilopascals (kPa)
what is one pascal equivient to?
1 N/m²
