Topic 3 - Basics of Waves Flashcards
what is wavelength (λ)?
the distance from one peak to the next
what is frequency (f)?
how many complete waves there are per second passing a certain point
what is frequency measured in?
hertz (Hz), 1 hertz is 1 wave per second
what is amplitude?
the height of the wave (from rest to crest)
what is speed (v-velocity)?
how fast the wave is
what is a wave period (t)?
the time it takes (s) for one complete wave to pass a point?
what is the formula for frequency?
frequency = 1 / period (f=1/t)
What is the formula for wave speed?
speed = frequency x wavelength
what is 1 kilohertz in hertz?
1000
what is 1 megahertz in hertz?
1,000,000
what is an example of a transverse wave?
EM waves
what is a transverse wave?
a wave where the vibrations are at 90 degrees to the direction energy is transferred by the wave
what are examples of longitudinal waves?
sound and ultrasound waves, shock waves
what is a longitudinal wave?
a wave where the vibrations are along the same direction as the wave transfers energy
what do all waves do?
carry and transfer energy in the direction they’re travelling
