Topic 6 - Magnets and Magnetic Fields Flashcards
how many poles do magnets have?
two - north and south
what is a magnetic field?
a region where magnetic materials experience a force
what are magnetic field lines used for?
to show the size and direction of magnetic fields
which direction do magnetic field lines point?
north to south
what can you use to see magnetic field patterns?
compasses and iron filings
how would you use compasses to see magnetic field lines?
put the compasses around the magnet and draw dots where the arrow points. join the dots with lines to show the field lines.
how would you use iron filings to see magnetic field patterns?
put the magnets under a piece of paper, scatter the iron filings on top and tap the paper until the filings form a pattern.
what do magnets affect?
magnetic materials and other magnets
which poles attract and which poles repel?
opposite poles attract and like poles repel
what do both magnetic poles attract?
magnetic materials (that arent magnets)
what happens when magnetic materials are brought near a magnet?
the magnetic material acts as a magnet, so magnetism has been induced by the original magnet
what can make induced magnetism stronger?
bringing the magnet and magnetic material closer
