Topic 6 Refkection Flashcards
What three things can happen when waves arrive at the boundary between two different materials
The waves are absorbed by the material - and transfers energy to the materials energy stores
The waves are transmitted - waves carry on travelling through the material this often leads to refraction
The waves are reflected
What does the angle of incidence equal
The angle of a reflection
What is the angle of incidence
The angle between incoming wave and the normal
What is the angle of reflection
The angle between the reflected wave and the normal
What is the normal
An imaginary line that is perpendicular to the surface at the point of incidence
What is the normal usually shown by
Dotted line
What is specular reflection
When a wave is reflected in a single direction by smooth surface
What is diffused reflection
When a wave is reflected by rough surface and reflected rays are scattered in lots of different directions
Why do different types of reflection happen
Because the normal is different for each incoming ray which means the angle of incidence is different for each ray
What happens when light is reflected by a rough surface
The surface appears more Matt and you don’t get a clear reflection of objects
