Topic 6 Exploring Dtructures Using Waves Flashcards

1
Q

What happens when a wave arrives at a boundary between a material

A

It can be completely reflected or partially reflected like an ultrasound imaging
The wave me continue travelling in the same direction for a different speed or it may be refracted or observed like S waves

Q

What do earthquakes and explosions produce

A

Seismic waves which can travel through the Earth and we can detect these all over the surface of the planet using seismometers

Q

What does seismologists do

A

Work out the time it takes for shockwaves to reach the seismometer they also know which part of the Earth don’t receive a shock waves at all

Q

What happens when seismic waves reach a boundary between different layers of material inside earth

A

Some waves will be absorbed and some will be refracted Most of the time if the waves are a fractured they change speed gradually resulting in a curved path but when the properties change suddenly the wave changes are properly on the path has a kink

Q

P waves

A

They are longitudinal
they travel through solids and liquids
they travel faster than S waves

A

Transverse
can’t travel through liquids or gases
slower than P waves
