Topic 5 Fluid Pressure Flashcards
What are fluids
Substances that can flow because their particles are able to move around
What do particles do as they move about
Collide with surfaces and other particles
What do particles do when they collide with a surface
Have a mass and exert a force in the object
What is pressure
Force per unit area
What does the pressure of a fluid mean that force is exerted at
Normal to any surface in contact with the fluid (right angle)
What is density
Measure of compactness of a substance
How close together the particles in a substance are
What is density for a liquid
It’s uniform (the same everywhere) and it doesn’t vary with shape or size
What can density vary in
In a gas
What does it mean if a liquid is denser
Has more particles in a certain space and more particles are able to collide so it has a higher pressure
Why does liquid pressure increase with depth
Number of particles above the point increase
The width of these particles adds to the pressure felt at that point
