topic 6 (midterm 2) Flashcards
operant extinction
the procedure of withholding reinforcers that maintain a behavior
classical extinction
the procedure of presenting the conditioned stimulus with out the unconditioned stimulus
spontaneous recovery
the tendency for extinguished behavior to occur again in situations the same as or similar to those where it had been previously reinforced. can occur after a span of time has elapsed
preventing spontaneous recovery
repeated sessions of extinction (usually in multiple settings) are required to prevent spontaneous recovery
partial reinforcement effect (PRE)
behaviors learned through intermittent reinforcement (partial reinforcement) are more resistant to extinction than those learned through continuous reinforcement
functional assessment process
- identify and define target behaviors
- initiate baseline date collection
- complete functional assessment (hypothesize about antecedents and consequences)
- develop and implement treatment
- evaluate effectiveness of treatment and its implementation
functional assessment
manipulate antecedents and consequences (possible reinforcers). Observe change in the behavior. replicate
social positive and negative reinforcement
mediated by the actions of others
automatic positive and negative reinforcement
not mediated by the actions of others
important considerations of extinction
is it safe to use extinction (emotional responses and behavioral variability)
can you apply extinction consistently
do you have procedures to promote generalization and maintenance
considering schedule of reinforcement
how was the problem behavior being maintained
continuous reinforcement us more prone to extinction than intermittent reinforcement
concerns and considerations with extinction
must be able to identify reinforcer for problem behavior
automatic reinforcement presents a challenge
extinction may cause harm to change agent or larner
extinction burst
Increase in frequency,
duration, and/or intensity of the unreinforced
behaviour during the extinction process
emotional responses
Heightened emotional
state during extinction can lead to aggression
