Topic 5 -Genetics Review Flashcards
Phenotype plasticity
the ability of a genotype to alter its phenotype expression under different environmental conditions
phenotype variation can be one of two ways
discrete or continuous
Discrete phenotype variation
alternative forms
ex social insects such as bees and ants
larvae hatch with almost identical genetic material but they have queens and workers
continuous phenotype variation
1 genotype can result in many phenotypes
ex Daphnia pigmentation to varying radiation
High UV = high pigmentation
High predator abundance = low pigmentation to blend in
Reaction norm
relationship between response of a continuously varying trait and environmental conditions
Conditions for Hardy-Weinburg equilibrium
No mutation No migration large population size random mating No selection
