Topic 15 -Logistic Growth Curves Flashcards
when N=k what happens with r
r=0 (b=d)
what is k
carrying capacity: population size N that the environment can carry or support
k acts as an equilibrium around which a population will fluctuate by
increasing if below k
decreasing if above k
determining k is difficult because
it does not necessarily remain the same over time
what is the logistic growth equation
delta N/delta T =rN(1-N/K)
what is (1-N/K)
it is a correction factor added to the exponential growth model
as population size increases and comes closer to the carrying capacity
the effects of the correction factor become stronger
as the population reaches the carrying capacity the rate of growth stops and if the population exceeds the carrying capacity
the population growth rate becomes negative
shrinking of resources and the potential for unequal distribution of these resources will lead to crowding which
leads to increase mortality
fewer offspring produced per individual
