Topic 4 - Lesson 4 Flashcards
Centres For Scientific Research
PURPOSE: They allow scientists to gain more knowledge on animals and how they breed
ADVANTAGES: Helps us to understand how to conserve certain species
DISADVANTAGES: They aren’t in their natural habitat
Captive breeding program
PURPOSE: They are set up to increase the amount of individuals in a species and to maintain genetic variation and hopefully enable them to be introduce animals into the wild
ADVANTAGES: It conserves species that are in line for extinction and animals can be reintroduced into the wild
DISADVANTAGES: Genetic Variation can be lost and lead to inbreeding depression
Reintroducing Animals into the wild
PURPOSE: e can reintroduce animals into the wild so they can live in their natural habitat with their natural survival skills and instincts
ADVANTAGES: Species living in their natural habitat increases the population and genetic variation
DISADVANTAGES: Animals may have to learn survival skills in order to thrive in the wild
Seed Banks
PURPOSE: It is to conserve seed samples from threatened plant species
ADVANTAGES: It is easy to store and keep the seeds safe for many years, they are also beneficial for research and habitat restoration
DISADVANTAGES: We aren’t always aware how long the seeds will live and it is costly to maintain the temperature required to preserve the seeds
Genetic Drift
In a small population some of the alleles aren’t passed onto offspring which will change the allele frequency which over time known as genetic drift
Inbreeding Depression
In a small population there is a likelihood of related individuals breeding causing the frequency of homozygous genotypes to rise with the loss of heterozygous possibly leading to harmful side effects such as inbreeding depression
Keeping Studbooks
It is a book which shows the history and location of all captive animals of that species as they provide raw data showing the understanding of genetic species and they ensure genetics are represented in future generations
