topic 4:freud & eysenck & aidman Flashcards
freud argument
that behaviour is driven by unconscious processes: personality … ego, super ego, id
freud theory
id and super ego are always in conflict, the role of the ego is to find a ‘balance’
if desires of id not satisfied, can build up aggressive energy, sport releases this
eysenck suggestion
introverts (calmer) have more activity in a part of brain (RAS) so need less stimulation from environment
eysenck argument
sports people more likely to be extroverts (lower arousal)
psychotism - 3rd factor theory (eysenck)
introduced later
when people have higher levels of this they’re likely to be more competitive
aidman examined
personality profiles of 32 junior australian football league players using cattells 16PF questionnaire compared to age matched controls
aidman findings
junior athletes more sociable, group orientated, stable but less driven, trusting then controls
aidman 7 year’s later
same players evaluated, 13 players made it to AFL competition, those who were more successful had less tension, stronger group orientation
