examine effect of dance intervention on mood in the elderly (particularly with PD)

37 participants aged 50-80

PD or not and length of intervention (long/short cycle)
method
week 1: completed POMS and a demographic questionnaire then a weekly dance session for 10 weeks (2-11)
(the sessions) = each class consisted of 10 min warm up, 30 mins dancing, 5 min cool down (style of dance changed every 2 weeks)
week 9: collected BRUMS before/after the sessions asking how they felt
10th session (completed POMS 2nd time)
results
taken from 30 P’s (17 PD)
PD showed higher TMD scores then the controls
both groups showed significant improvements in overall mood (POMS & BRUMS)
conclusions
taking part in a weekly dance session can significantly improve mood in elderly because dancing is a mental challenge and sociable
