persons ability to receive, process, understand and use health info to make informed decisions about care
what is the most common source of health information? what is important when creating this type of source?
written sources- vital to make them easy to understand
what is plain language?
a way to organize/present health info so it makes sense

-gets message across to greatest number of people
what can you do to educational content to increase comprehension?
1) remove excess words in written material
-conscise and straight to the point
2) use shorter sentences with a single idea (<20 words)
3) use common words (1-2 syllables)
4) don’t change verbs into nouns
- “the requirement of” vs the ___ “requires”
5) avoid cliches
- can be easily miscunderstood, especially with different cultures
6) use active voice
- paints vivid picture
7) avoid abbreviations / acronyms
8) write directly to user
9) write instructions in the order you want them carried out
10) organize material (present info in a logical sequence)
11) use bulleted / numbered lists
- breaks up texts

what is a nominalization? how is it recognized?
a “zombie noun”
-recognized by the ending (“able”, “ion” , “ism”, “ance”,)
why is a passive voice not as effective as an active voice?
In a passive voice, the sibject is acted upon by the verb
-it is not as well understood
“the banana was eaten by the monkey” vs “the monkey ate the banana”
if you can’t avoid the usage of abbreviations / acronyms, what can you do?
define them before the acronym is used
what impact does writing directly to your user have?
it makes the information more relevant to the client / know what their responsibility is
How can using a postivite tone aid in rewording a statement?
instead of looking at a situation “glass half full”, reword it with a positive attitude to state it in another perspective
how should you organize material to bets suit the users?
-put most important info first
-chunk information
-make sections / lists
How does the inverted pyramid explain how to format information?
main message first, followed by important details and then background infor and related content
what grade level should you keep the content at when delivering information?
Grade 8
what can be used to predict the difficulty of a text?
readability formulas
