why is NUTR education important but challenging?
Important: food choices have an impact on personal health, community well being and the environment
challenges:
- Biological factors (‘body wisdom, appetite vs hunger)

why is NUTR education needed?
- large cause of death associated w eating patterns
-high rates of obesity in Canada
-Environmental concerns (gas emissions, water usage, fertilizers/ fossil fuels)
-complex / confusing food market
what is the definition of nutrition education?
any combination of educational strategies, accompanied by environmental supports, designed to motivate and facilitate voluntary adoption of food choices and other food-and-nutrition-related behaviours conducive to health and wellbeing
what is nutrition councelling?
supportive process that uses collaborative counselor-patient/client relationship to establish priorities, goals and action plans related to fool, nutrition and physical activity
what is the difference between teaching and learning?
Teaching: primary goal is to promote learning ; transfer of knowledge to another person
Learning: acquisition of knowledge, attitudes, skills or a change in behaviour

what is added value?
difference between the cost to make a product and what the customer pays for it
what kinds of foods have a higher added value? why?
highly processed foods
-they are made from simple starches which aren’t too expensive to manufacture and customers will pay higher prices for it
what are the different forms of food marketing?
branding, sponsorship, celebrity endorsements, contests/sales promotions, social media, commercials/ads, product placement

why is advertising to kids an issue?
-undermines parental authority
-kids may not know they are being advertised to
-perpetuated by technology
-linked to obesity
What is the canadian children’s food and beverage advertising initiative want to do?
- advertise only healthy choices to children under 12
-include healthy foods in interactive games to children under 12
-no advertising in elementary school (vending machines)
