Topic 3 - Inter-relationships: Drugs Flashcards
What do hallucinogens do? Give an example of a hallucinogen.
Hallucinogens distort what’s seen and heard. LSD is an example of a hallucinogen.
Stimulants and depressants are types of drug. What is the difference between them?
Stimulants increase the speed of reactions and neurotransmission at synapses. Depressants slow down the activity of the brain.
What is a drug?
Most drugs are chemical substances that affect the central nervous system. They cause changes to psychological behaviour and can also cause addiction.
What do painkillers do? Give an example of a painkiller.
Painkillers decrease the feeling of pain. Morphine is an example of a painkiller.
Describe an experiment to test someone’s reaction time.
E.g. One person holds a ruler vertically between the thumb and forefinger of the person being tested. Then they let go without giving any warning. The person being tested tries to catch the ruler as quickly as they can. Reaction time is measured by how far down the ruler is caught. The further down it’s caught, the slower their reactions.
