Topic 3 - Inter-relationships: Carbon Cycle Flashcards
What role does photosynthesis play in the carbon cycle?
Photosynthesis in plants is the only process in the carbon cycle that removes carbon dioxide from the atmosphere.
What role do fossil fuels play in the carbon cycle?
When fossil fuels are burnt, they release carbon dioxide into the atmosphere, allowing the carbon cycle to continue.
What role do decomposes play in the carbon cycle?
When plants and animals decay they’re broken down by bacteria and fungi. These decomposes release carbon dioxide back into the atmosphere during respiration.
How does respiration contribute to the carbon cycle?
Both animals and plants respire, releasing carbon dioxide back into the atmosphere. Then it is used in photosynthesis and the carbon cycle begins again.
Describe briefly how carbon moves through the food chain.
Carbon from the atmosphere is used to make carbohydrates, proteins and fats in plants. The carbon is passed through the food chain in these compounds when organisms feed on each other.
