Topic 2 - Responding To Change: Insulin And Diabetes Flashcards
What is type 1 diabetes?
Type 1 diabetes is a condition where the pancreas produces little or no insulin. This means that a person’s blood sugar level can get really high.
What is type 2 diabetes?
Type 2 diabetes is a condition where the pancreas doesn’t produce enough insulin or when a person becomes resistant to insulin.
How is the glucose content of the blood controlled by the body?
The pancreas monitors and controls the blood glucose level within the body. If it’s too high, then insulin will be released to decrease the level. Insulin causes excess glucose to be converted to glycogen in the liver. If the blood glucose level is too low, glycogen in the liver is converted to glucose and released into the blood.
How can type 1 diabetes be controlled?
It can be controlled through diet, exercise and insulin injections. A careful diet would allow patients to monitor how much sugar they are eating. Exercise would allow them to use up excess sugar. Insulin injections would provide the insulin needed to reduce blood sugar level.
How can type 2 diabetes be controlled?
It can be controlled by eating a healthy diet, getting regular exercise and losing weight if needed. Some patients also have insulin injections.
