Topic 3 - GROUP 7 DISPLACEMENT REACTIONS Flashcards
What is a displacement reaction?
when more reactive halogen displaces a less reactive halogen to produce an AQUEOUS SOLUTION OF ITS HALIDE.
What happens to reactivity of group 7 non-metals?
reactivity of group 7 non-metals increases as you go UP the group.
Why does the solution turn orange when chlorine solution is added to colourless potassium solution?
Because bromine is formed
What happens when Chlorine + Potassium Bromide solution?
Chlorine + Potassium Bromide Solution —> Potassium Chloride solution + Bromide
Chlorine above bromine in Group 7 so is more reactive + displaces bromine from aqueous solution of metal bromide.
SYMBOL EQUATION OF Chlorine + Potassium Bromide solution?
Cl2 + 2KBr —> 2KCl + Br2
