Topic 2 - structure (II) Flashcards
1
Q
What do periods in the periodic table indicate?
A
Number of electron shells
2
Q
What do groups in the periodic table indicate?
A
How many electrons in outer shell
3
Q
Characteristics of METALS
A
- conduct electricity
- are on the left side of the periodic table
- good heat conductors
- shiny
- have high melting + boiling points
- high density
- ARE BASIC OXIDE
- have 1,2,3 electrons in outer shell (lose electrons easily).
4
Q
Characteristics of NON - METALS
A
- don´t conduct electricity (EXCEPT GRAPHITE)
- are on the right side of the periodic table
- poor heat conductors
- dull
- low density
- low melting + boiling points
- ARE ACIDIC OXIDE
- have more than 4 electrons in outer shell (gain electrons easily).
5
Q
Why do elements from the same group have similar chemical properties?
A
Because they have the same number of electrons in their outer shell.
6
Q
Why don´t noble gases react?
A
Because they are in Group 0 meaning that they have complete outer shells so they dont lose or gain electrons. (ARE UNREACTIVE)
