Topic 2 - The periodic table (I) Flashcards
What is an atom?
The smallest amount of an element that can exist.
What is a molecule?
Two or more atoms joined together. (chemically bonded)
What is the structure of an atom?
Nucleus, (protons + neutrons) Electron shells (electrons)
Where can we find a proton neutron and electron?
Protons and neutrons are in the nucleus and electrons are in the electron shells.
What is the mass of a proton?
1
What is the mass of a neutron?
1
What is the mass of an electron?
1/200 or negligible
What is the charge of a proton?
+1
What is the charge of a neutron?
0
What is the charge of an electron?
-1
What does the term mass number indicate?
Total number of protons + neutrons in the nucleus
What does the term atomic number indicate?
How many protons in the nucleus. (same number of protons and electrons)
What are isotopes?
Atoms of the same element that have the same number of protons but different number of neutrons.
How do you calculate the relative atomic mass?
Ar= (% x mass 1) + (% x mass 2) / 100
