SEPARATION TECHNIQUES FOR SEPARATING MIXTURES Flashcards
1
Q
SIMPLE DISTILATION
A
Used to separate soluble solid from solution.
METHOD:
- solution heated + water vapour rises + evaporates
- water vapour passes through condenser where it cools
- Turns into a liquid + then collected in beaker
- Water evaporates from solution + solute left behind.
2
Q
FRACTIONAL DISTILATION
A
Used to separate 2 or more liquids that are miscible with one another.
METHOD:
- solution heated at temp. of substance with lowest melting point
- substance rises + evaporates + vapour pases through condenser
- turns into liquid + collected in beaker
- al of substance evaporates + collected leaving behind a mixture or substance.
3
Q
Filtration
A
Used to separate an insoluble solid from a mixture or solution
METHOD:
4
Q
CRYSTALISATION
A
Used to separate solute from solution
METHOD:
- heat solution
- water evaporates, leaving behind saturated solution
- as solution cools, crystals form
