Topic 3 Density Of Materials Flashcards
Solid
Strong forces of attraction join the particles close together in fixed regular arrangement
Vibrate about the fixed position
The density is generally highest in this state as the particles are closest together
Liquid
Weaker forces of attraction
Patidels are close together but can move past each other and form irregular arrangements
They have more energy than solids and move in random directions at low speeds
Less dense then solids
Gases
Almost no forces of attraction between the particles
The particles have more energy than in liquid and solids
Free to move and travel in random directions at high speeds
Generally have low densities
What is a dense material
Has its particles packed tightly together
More mass in a given volume
What would happen if you compressed a material
Particles would move closer together and become more dense
