Topic 1 Hydroelectricity, waves and tides ***** Flashcards
How is hydroelectric power made
Flooding and valley and building a big dam and water flows through the turbines and spins them producing electricity
Hydroelectric dams impact on the environment
Big impact on the environment due to flooding of the valley (rotting vegetation release methane and co2)
But doesn’t have any pollution
Where is hydroelectricity made
Remote valleys where the impact has less on views of humans
Positive of using hydroelectricity
Provide immediate response to an increased demand for electricity
Negatives of using hydroelectric dams
Initial costs high but there’s are no fuel costs and minimal running costs
How do waves produce electricity
Where do wave turbines need to be
Do wave turbines impact the environment
No pollution
Disturbing seabed and habitats of marine animals
Spoil view
Hazard to boats
Negatives if wave powered turbines
fairly unreliable since waves tend to due out when the wind drops
Positives of wave powered turbines
Initial costs are high but no fuel costs and minimal running costs
How do tides produce electricity
Where do tidal barrages have to be
Somewhere where the tide comes in and fan fill it up
Controlled by suns and moons gravitational pull
Do tidal barrages impact the environment
Prevent free access for boats
Spoil view
Alter habitats
Negative of tidal barrages
High initial costs
Spoil view
Prevent free access of boats
Positive of tidal barrages
Reliable
If tides lower they will produce significantly less energy than bigger tides
Wont work when water level is same on both sides
