Topic 2 Electric Fields Flashcards
What creates electric fields
Electric charges
What happens when you get closer to an electrically charged object
The field is stronger
Where do the arrows point on a positively charged object
Away from the object
Where do the arrows point on a negative charged object
Toward the object
How are the arrows situated
At a right angle from the object
What do close lines mean
The electric field is strong as the further you go away the lines aren’t as close so the field is weak
What happens when a charged object is place in a electric field
It feels a force
What does the force cause
Attraction or repulsion
What is the force caused by
the electric fields of each charged object interacting with each other
What is the force on the object linked to
The strength of the electric field
What happens as you increase the distance between 2 charged objects
The strength of the field decreases and the force between them gets smaller
How two oppositely charged particles are pulled together
The electric fields interact
The forces act on both particle
The forces move them closer
How are sparks caused by electric fields
When there is heigh enough pd between the charged object and the earth
A high pd causes a strong electric field between the charged object and the earthed object
The strong electric field causes electrons in the air particles to be removed (ionisation)
Air is normally an insulated but when ionised is more conducting so current can flow and there is a spark
