Topic 1 Energy resources and their uses Flashcards
What is the definition of nonrenewable resources
A natural substance that is not replenished with the same speed at which it’s consumed
What are examples of nonrenewable energy resources
Fossil fuels and nuclear fuel
What are the three main fossil fuels
Coal
oil
(natural) gas
Will nonrenewable resources and run out one day
Yes
Do fossil fuels damage the environment
Yes
Are Fossil fuels reliable
Yes
What is the definition of renewable resources
Resource that is replenished naturally overtime
They will never run out
Examples of renewable energy resources
Solar
Wind
water waves
hydroelectricity
biofuel
tides
geothermal
Do renewable resources damage the environment
Damaged environment but less than non-renewable resources
What are some problems with renewable resources
They don’t provide much energy
Some of them are unreliable because they depend on the weather
What nonrenewable energy resources are used for transport
Petrol and diesel powered vehicles use fuel created from oil
Cold is used in some old-fashioned steam trains to boil water to produce steam
Renewable energy resources used for transport
Vehicles run on pure biofuels or mix of biofuel, petrol or diesel
Nonrenewable energy resources used for heating
Natural gas is the most wildly used fuel for heating homes in the UK gas is used to heat water witch is pumped into radiators
Coal is commonly burnt in fireplaces
Electric heaters use electricity generated from non-renewable energy resources
Renewable energy resources used for heating
Geothermal heat pump uses geothermal energy resources to heat
Solar water heaters are using the Sun and heat water which is pumped into radiators
Burning biofuel or even using electricity generated from renewable resources
Examples of renewable energy sources
Sun (solar)
Wind
Water waves
Hydroelectricity
Biofuel
Tides
Geothermal
