Topic 3 Flashcards
1
Q
What are oxidation numbers?
A
- AKA oxidation state
- Refers to the number given to an ion or an atom in a compound to keep track of how many electrons they have
2
Q
How do you calculate oxidation numbers of different elements?
A
- Depends on the electronegativity of the element
- The charge of the ion or lack of charge of the ion
3
Q
What happens in oxidation reactions?
A
An element that has oxidised looses electrons
4
Q
What happens in reduction reactions?
A
An element that has reduced gains electrons
5
Q
What are reducing agents?
A
- An element that helps reduce another element
- But itself is oxidised
6
Q
What are oxidising agents?
A
- An element that helps oxidised another element
- But itself is reduced
7
Q
What is a disproportionation reaction?
A
Where the same element in a reaction has both been reduced and oxidised simultaneously
8
Q
What is a redox reaction?
A
- Where in a reaction there is at least one instance of both oxidation and reduction
- Disproportionation is an example of a redox reaction
9
Q
How would you use oxidation numbers to write formulae? How would you use oxidation numbers to write formulae?
A
10
Q
How can you form systematic names from oxidation numbers?
A
- Depends on the Positive ions oxidation number
- Should be used unless told not to
