Topic 2 - Element 2 Flashcards
What is the purpose of the International Code of Botanical Nomenclature?
To agree standardisation, clarity and accuracy, encourage international co-operation
What is the International Code of Nomenclature for Cultivated Plants?
Ensuring a standard amongst growers and collectors of cultivars
What is a nomenclatural standard?
A set of rules, principles, or guidelines established to govern the naming and classification of organisms within a particular taxonomic group.
What is a type specimen?
A reference point for a particular plant
What is the role of the International Plant Names index?
A centralised platform of the names and synonyms, and bibliographic references. It facilitates the identification and verification of plant names, ensuring consistency and accuracy in their usage across different publications and databases.
What role does The Plant Finder play in horticultural nomenclature?
A user friendly way of exploring different variations, for example a child’s name. Preferred soil types.
What standard resources for plant information does the RHS provide?
Plant trials and awards

What are the rules of The International Code of Nomenclature
- The code applies to all organisms that are currently called algae, fungi and plants
- Nomenclatural types (described below) are used to apply names
- The first published name is always used
- There is only one name for each taxonomic group
- The scientific names follow rules of Latin
- The rules are applied to names in the past
What is the International Plant Names Index (IPNI), World Flora Online

is hosted by Kew and is produced by a collaboration between The Royal Botanic Gardens
