Topic 2 Flashcards
(22 cards)
What factors can affect health?
- diet
- exercise
- genes
- community (mental health)
What is health?
overall state of physical and mental well-being
What is cancer?
when cells begin to divide uncontrollably
What does cancer lead to?
lumps
- benign tumours (slow and generally harmless)
- malignant tumours (fast, aggressive, mobile)
What are risk factors of cancer?
- smoking (lung)
- diet (bowel)
- amount of time in sun (skin)
- unprotected sex (cervical)
What is the palisade mesophyll?
where photosynthesis takes place
What is the cuticle?
waxy layer
What is the upper epidermis?
covers plant
What is the spongy mesophyll?
space for gas exchange
What is the lower epidermis?
covers plant
What is the stomata?
transpiration
What does xylem do?
carries water up the plant from the roots to the leaves
What does phloem do?
ions and food down the plant from leaf where food can be made to roots where food can be stored
Factors that affect rate of transpiration
- light
- temperature
- wind
- humidity
Function of waxy cuticle?
reduce water loss by evaporation
Function of upper epidermis
transplant so light can pass through to the palisade layer
Function of the palisade layer?
most chloroplast and is at top of leaf to get most light
Function of xylem and phloem?
deliver water and nutrients to the leafy and take away glucose
Function of stomata?
diffusion of carbon dioxide controlled by guard cells
What is translocation?
phloem tubes transporting food made in the leaf to the rest of the plant
what is transpiration?
loss of water through the plant
what causes transpiration?
diffusion (more water inside plant than the air outside) and evaporation at leaves
