Circulatory System- Blood Flashcards
What is bloods job?
acts as a huge transport system
What is the job of red blood cells?
carries oxygen from the lungs to all the cells around the body
What is the shape of the red blood cell and why is this helpful?
biconcave disc
gives large surface area for absorbing oxygen
Why do red blood cells not have a nucleus?
it gives a larger surface are no a to carry oxygen
What is the red pigment in red blood cells called?
haemoglobin
What does haemoglobin do in the lungs and in body tissues?
lungs- binds together with oxygen to become oxyhaemoglobin
tissues- oxyhaemoglobin splits up into haemoglobin and oxygen to release into cells
What is phagocytosis?
when white blood cells change shape to gobble up unwanted microorganisms
What is the function of antibodies and antitoxins?
antibodies- produced to fight microorganisms
antitoxins- produced to neutralise toxins produced by the microorganism
What are platelets?
small fragments of cells with no nucleus that help your blood clot at your wound to stop blood from flowing out and microorganisms getting in
lack of platelets cause excessive bleeding and bruising
What substances do plasma carry?
liquid that carries everything in the blood:
red blood cells white blood cells platelets urea amino acids glucose carbon dioxide protein hormones antitoxins antibodies
