Lungs Flashcards
Where are lungs located?
In the thorax and it is separated from the lower part of the body by the diaphragm
What protects the lungs?
Ribcage and surrounded by pleural membranes
Explain the splitting of the trachea.
- It goes in through the trachea (windpipe)
- the trachea is then split into two tubes called bronchi (bronchus singular) one going in each lung
- bronchi is then split progressively into small tubes called bronchioles
- bronchioles then end in small bags called alveoli where gas exchange takes place
What is alveoli surrounded by?
network of blood capillaries
What does blood passing next to the alveoli contain and why?
contains loads of carbon dioxide because it is has returned to the lungs from the rest of the body
How does the alveoli carry out gas exchange?
the alveolus has a high concentration and the blood has a low concentration so oxygen diffuses out of the alveolus into the blood
the blood then has a higher concentration than the alveolus so the carbon dioxide is diffused out into the alveolus to be breathed out.
What happens when blood reaches body cells?
oxygen is released from red blood cell (high concentration) and diffuses into the body cells (low concentration)
Calculating Breathing Rate
Breaths Per Min (BPM) =
number of breaths/number of minutes
