Cardiovascular Disease Flashcards
What is coronary heart disease?
when your coronary arteries are blocked by fatty materials building up.
What does coronary heart disease cause?
- arteries become narrow and the blood flow becomes restricted
- lack of oxygen to heart muscle which could result in a heart attack
What are the use of stents?
tubes that are inserted inside arteries to keep them open to make sure blood continues passing through.
Advantages of stents
- lower risk of heart attack
- effective for long
- recovery time is quite quick
Disadvantages of stents
- risk of infection
- complications during surgery
- developing blood clot near the stent
What is cholesterol?
an essential fat needed in the body
What is LDL cholesterol and what does it cause?
too much of a certain type of (bad) cholesterol in the bloodstream that can cause fatty deposits to build up causing coronary heart disease
What are the use of statins?
drugs that lower cholesterol in the blood stream and slow down the fatty deposit build up
Advantages of statins
- reduce the risk of strokes, coronary heart disease and heart attacks
- increase the amount of HDL cholesterol (good)
- may help other diseases
Disadvantages of statins
- must be taken regularly meaning someone could forget
- negative side affects (headaches, kidney failure, memory loss)
- takes time to kick in
